We all love HALLOWEEN and when a plan comes together…

“Greta, are you sure you packed on my winter clothes?”

“Yes, Miss Connie, I picked up the last of your items from the cleaners yesterday.”

“Has Duncan called this evening to me tell when I should meet him at the airport?”

“No, he has not called. Should I ring him up?”

“I’ll call him myself.”

Constance walked into her bedroom to make the call to Duncan.

“Hello, Duncan. Are we still on for our trip?”

“Yes, yes, Constance, we’re confirmed, so calm down. I said to you before, our plan is in motion and it’s a go.”

“I wish I was as confident as you, my dear. I still have so many questions.”

“Constance, ALL IN GOOD TIME.”

SOPHIA GOT WHAT SHE WANTED….

A REAL FATHER FOR ISABELLA.

Sophia  was floating on air because Anthony was going to marry her.

“Vicky, it’s a dream come true for us. I will have a real father for my daughter.”

“OK, but are you in LOVE?”

“What does love have to do with it? I found a way not to go back to work for a very long time, maybe, never. Anthony is going to take care of me.”

“Sophia, you don’t love him?”

“I care about him, love will happen ALL IN GOOD TIME. Just be happy for me. Let’s go shopping, I have so much to plan and shop for the wedding.”

Her friend, Vicky, shook her head and said,” I hope you know what you are doing because this might not end well. But, I will accept the fact that love takes time. When is the wedding, again?”

The two women laughed as they grabbed their handbags and marched out the door like tin soldiers going to battle…ALL IN GOOD TIME.

AFTERNOON TEA WITH CONSTANCE

“Shall I pour?”

“Yes, Mother, you may.”

Constance was impressed with Anthony’s date, Sophia and her well behaved daughter.

She was suspicious of  the young woman’s motives but she didn’t let it show.

“Sophia, Anthony told me that you are working at the British Embassy.”

“Well, Mrs. Dole, I was working there but I got fired.”

“Fire? What for? Trading British secrets?” Constance laughed at her own joke but she wanted to know more about Sophia.

“Mother, Sophia, wasn’t really fired; she quit. Her boss threatened her.”

“Oh, my, what did he do actually?”

“Mrs. Dole, he wanted to now if he was the father of my baby.”

“Ahhh, so is he?”

“No, he’s not.”

“This is getting interesting.”

“Mother, can we drop the subject. Sophia and I have good news for you.”

“What ever you say, Anthony. I love mysteries and romance. I was asking because I was curious. You know me, always talking. Sorry, what your news?”

“Sophia and I are engaged.”

Constance was taken back for a moment because she didn’t see it coming.

“Well, then let me say congratulations. Are you planning a big wedding soon?”

“We have not discussed the details of the wedding, yet Mrs. Dole. But I hope we get married soon.”

Sophia is right, we would like to get married with your and Dad’s blessing.”

“Of course, you have my blessing, dear.” As Constance reached out and kissed her son and hugged Sophia.

WE DON’T WANT TO BE LATE…

Anthony was looking forward to taking Sophia and her daughter, Isabella, to his Mother’s for afternoon tea.

“Now, Sophia don’t be scared of my mother, she’s harmless.”

“Do you think she will like us? I’m a little nervous, I must admit.”
“What’s not to like? She will love you. Come on, let’s go and I promise, you will have a good time.”

“Does she know about us?”

“Not yet, but we will tell her at tea.”

CHAMPAGNE TOAST

”Let’s have a toast… To life anew.”

“Hmmm, Duncan, interesting thought. Cheers.”

“Cheers, my dear.”

“These champagne glasses remind me of the Great Gatsby Movie.”

“That movie didn’t end well for old Gatsby, now did it? Here’s to a better ending, I hope, cheers.”

“Are we in a movie or is this real life?”

“What we are in…well, let’s just say, we need to escape from one life into another.”

“Is it our only choice?”

“Right now, Constance, it’s a matter of staying alive. I’ve told you what I did in the TRACK case. I was called into a rescue situation with the girl and I delivered but the events are changing. Disappearing for a few months or years will help relieve the pressure on me.

“Why, am I suddenly part of this scenario?”

“Because Constance, they have not only threaten me but they have told me that you will not be safe.”
Constance looked down at her champagne glass and wished she was not involved in Duncan’s dealings but there she was, right in the middle of it.

“Where do you suggest we go, Duncan?”

“Since my family is from Scotland, I was thinking it would be safe for us to take a trip

to my homeland.”

ROMANTIC DINNER FOR TWO

Duncan had promised Constance a romantic dinner in Paris and he delivered just that to her.

“Duncan, you really out did yourself. I wasn’t expecting this.”

“Only the best for my fine lady. Wine or champagne?”

“Let’s start with wine and finish with champagne. I read that was how Jackie Kennedy served champagne at her dinner parties. I know it sounds unusual, but I like the idea, so let’s do it Jackie’s way.”

“You know, I didn’t get to meet Jack Kennedy but I was introduced to his brother, Teddy, when he was in the Senate.  Such a great guy.”

“You really got around, Duncan, working for British Intelligence.”

“So, did you, Constance. In fact I believe we both got around the world through the eyes of the British.”

“Yes, we did and I do not regret my career in Intelligence; do you, Duncan?”

“Constance, have you ever thought of leaving Paris and living somewhere else?”

“No, why would I live some where else?  I consider Paris my home, now.”

“Yes, but let’s say, we had to leave Paris. Where would you want to live? An island, maybe?”

“Are you seriously considering relocating?

“I’m thinking, WE, relocating together.”

Constance was surprised by Duncan’s questions of relocating, out of Paris. What was this WE, as in together we move somewhere.

She sipped her wine and glanced at the menu in front of her. Duncan had noticed the waiter hovering over Constance, so, he decided to do the ordering for them both.

“My beautiful date, will have the Salmon, grilled, with the mixed vegetables and I’ll have the steak, rare, with a side salad.”

Duncan quickly dismissed the young man. He hated pushy waiters.

When their dinners came to the table, Duncan frown at his plate.

“What’s wrong, Duncan?”

“I wanted rare steak, but this looks medium to me.”

“Duncan, just eat it, if you sent the steak back to the kitchen,  it will anger the chef.”

“Oh, I hate to admit it, but you are right. I’ll try to pretend I’m enjoying it.”

“Thank you. Bon Appetite.”

Duncan enjoyed his steak but was looking forward to dessert with champagne and talking with Constance about TRACK Labs and what he knows.

Constance spent her afternoon looking at the latest issue of VOGUE magazine and having a freshly brewed cup of coffee.

She took off her watch and started to make some notes about the events of the other night. She didn’t want time to get away from her.

Hearing her phone buzz, she glanced over to see that it was her son, Anthony, calling.

“Hello my dear. How are you? It seems like ages.”

“Now, Mother, it’s been a few weeks, but I’m busy.”

“Who is she, Anthony?”

Anthony should have known that his Mother would have guessed that a new girlfriend was occupying his time.

“You are going to adore Sophia and her daughter, Isabella.”

“Oh, so there are two of them. How exciting, a little girl. When am I going to meet Sophia and her daughter?”

“How about next week, for tea?”

“Perfect, Anthony. I can’t wait.”

“I’m excited for you to meet them. So, next week. Bye.”

Constance woke up during the night from a DREAM.

Sitting up in bed, she peered into the darkness. Was it a dream or a nightmare?

She wasn’t sure. The only thing she could remember was that Duncan was sleeping in the guest room. Constance had to admit, it was a good feeling to have him close. She couldn’t shake the feeling of the young woman at her wine party last night. Was she threatening Duncan? Or was she in danger, herself. She planned on confronting Duncan in the morning about the incident.

Constance laid back down in her white floral sheets and pulled the covers up around her tightly.

It seemed like hours before she could back to sleep and when she got to sleep, it was morning. The sun was shining brightly through her drapes and her cat, Tabby, wanted to her breakfast.

Constance got up and slipped on her robe and slippers and strolled into the kitchen.

“Morning, Greta.”

“Morning, Miss Connie. What do you want for breakfast?”

“Pancakes. Yes, pancakes. Duncan likes pancakes. Is he up yet?”

“I don’t see him but there’s a note for you on the dining room table.”

Constance gave Greta a puzzling look and then exited the kitchen in search of the note.

Dear Connie,

Sorry, my dear, I must get back home and finish up my work.

I’ll call you in a few days.

I promise you a romantic dinner in Paris, soon.

With love,

Duncan
