Paul Chan was a shifty character from China who knew how to run a
successful business in Paris.
His humble beginnings in China left him no choice but learn to made money
at the age of seven. Paul’s parents were very poor; they barely had enough to eat when
they put their son, Paul, on the streets to beg for money.
Paul learned that if he danced for the shoppers he earned more money.
Soon, he enlisted girls to dance for him and he took their money
and gave them a small percentage.
Paul was street wise with no formal schooling.
He associated with the gangs of China
and learned the craft of scamming people quickly.
At twenty-two, Paul met Lily Lee at a party.
She was way out of his league but he liked her
and eventually, they became friends.
Lily wanted to leave China but her parents would not allow her to
go to Europe without them.
Her father, Sam Lee, was a scientist for the government.
He worked on top secret projects that he couldn’t discuss with anyone,
not even his wife, Ling.
Sam and Ling met each other when they were very young. Their parents
didn’t approve of the marriage, so Sam and Ling ran off and got married.
Much to the dismay of their parents.
Many, many years later, they had a baby and named her Lily, after the flower.
The Lee family had a good life but Lily their daughter was restless and wanted
to travel…Paris, Italy, America…anywhere.
Finally, with the persuasion of Paul Chan, they promised Lily they would take her
to Paris for a month. Sam was sure he would be able to get away
from the laboratory for that long. It took some time for the Chinese government
to approval his travel but once they did, some how it was Paul Chan who ended up
as their guide and caretaker for the Lee family.
Paul had connections with the government and he was eager to prove
his worthiness to them. Paul, as usual, was looking out for himself.
Once in Paris, Paul set up, with the help of a friend, the dance club.
He insisted that Lily work for him. That way, he could keep an eye on her.
He saw Lily’s beauty and charm and figured the men would pay big bucks
to see Lily dance.
Paul was right. The men came and drank and watched Lily dance;
money was rolling in.
However, her parents didn’t know that their daughter was dancing at a local club.
They thought she was taking classes at night at the university.
Lily was afraid to tell them. So, she kept quiet. Lily thought if she made
enough money she could convince her parents to
go to America with her.
But, the money was not coming into her as she expected.
Paul was only giving her a little salary and told her business was not good.
Lily believed him at first, but later, she realized the crowds were getting bigger.
She asked Paul for more money and he said no.
Lily was beginning to hate him.
She was the one up on stage every night dancing away until her feet hurt.
Lily was secretly making her own plan for an escape.
