An evening of wine connoisseurs socializing was a bit overwhelming for Duncan

but he was a sport and kept up with the group.

Towards the end of the party, there was a younger girl who took a liking to Duncan and that was when she made her move.

“Good evening, Mr. Duncan Dole.”

Duncan swirled around and saw a young woman with a bottle of bubbly standing close to him. Smiling at her, he took the glasses she was carrying and directed her to a cozy and quiet seat in the patio.

“You’ve been watching me all evening. Should I be impressed or is this business?”

“Mr. Dole, everything we do at TRACK is business.”

“Ahhh, here I thought it was my good looks.”

“Don’t get me wrong…who says you can’t mix business with pleasure. Shall we have a glass a champagne and discuss it.”

“I’m willing. However, I don’t know your name.”

“Silly me, it’s Dana.”

“Just Dana, no last name?”

“Dana for now.” As she gave him one of those looks to lead him to wonder what she had planned.

“Then, I say Dana, Cheers.”

“Cheers.”

After a few sips of champagne, Duncan wanted to know why she was stalking him at his ex-wife’s wine party. Was she an employee of TRACK?

“Dana, now we have gone through the pleasantries, what can I do for you?”

“It’s not me, but TRACK wants to be sure you keep a lid on the happenings at the Lab.”

“But, I have not told anyone about the missing women at the Lab.”

“Good, keep it that way. Ex wives can be dangerous and accidents can be deadly.”

Not many customers visited the old reading room bookstore

on a late Saturday afternoon but

Sophia was taking a break from her baby, Isabella. She sunk down in one of the chairs and opened a book which she pulled off the dusty shelf. Sophia sneezed.

“Bless you.”

Startled by a voice, Sophia looked up and saw a younger man standing near by and smiling.

“Why, thank you. It must be those musty smelling books.

“I have allergies, too. So, I know that feeling. Do you need a Kleenex?”

“Yes, thank you. I didn’t bring my bag with me. I just bought my smartphone.”
“I can see that. Here.” As he handed Sophia a white tissue.

“If you are going to be such a white knight, I better know your name.”

“Of course, I must have left manners back at my apartment.
I’m Anthony. Anthony Dole.”

“Anthony Dole, so nice to meet you, I’ll Sophia Stratton.”

Anthony shook Sophia’s hand and then quickly sat down on one of the chairs. He couldn’t help but notice her hazel colored eyes and her sophisticated style. Sophia was not an ordinary woman.

“Sophia do you come here often?”

Laughing, Sophia answered, “No, it’s my first time. What about you?”

“First time, too.”

They both laughed.

Anthony was falling for Sophia. Was she the one?
Sophia, Sophia. He loved her name. It was poetry, magical and he had visions of a future with her.

THE WINE CLUB

Constance was putting the last touches to her garden wine club party,

when her ex-husband, Duncan appeared at the front door.

“You’re early, Duncan.”

“I never like to be late, my dear.”

Constance smiled and kissed him on both cheeks.

Directing Duncan outside and onto the patio garden, Constance poured him a glass of champagne.

“What are we celebrating, Constance?”

“Nothing special. Except, well, it’s been too long. Our getting together is a celebration.”

“Cheers.” As Duncan raised his glass and then looked around for the other guests.

“I must be early.”

“Yes, but it gives a chance to talk.”

Duncan still looking around the garden and then back into the house, “Let’s sit down

so we can talk.”

“I know you asked me if I knew about the missing women from TRACK Labs.”

“Yes, I did.”

“I have to come clean. Yes, I know more than you read in the newspapers.”

“Duncan, were you involved?”

“Yes, Constance, I was and still am. That’s all I can reveal to you. And don’t ask me questions.”

IT WAS EVENING IN WASHINGTON DC.

However, the government was always working and Mr. Harris was meeting with his boss

in an office not far from the WHITE HOUSE.

“Did you tell him about his own dad?”

“Look Matt, I didn’t get a chance, Anthony hung up on me before I had an opportunity.”

“Why have we been paying his guy? He need his involvement in this. Just make it happen

before the press gets more on the story. We don’t the story to get away from us, we have to control the operation.”

“Trust me, on this Matt, I’ll take care of the details.”

Sophia needed to get some fresh air and what better way

to do that was to go for a bike ride.

Her conversation with Norman didn’t go well and now she was jobless.

How stupid she was to announce to him that she quit.

What was she going to do for money?

She had a baby to care for now.

Her only option was to call her father and ask to borrow money.

Oh, she wished there would be a better way.

Sophia hoped the bike ride would clear her head.

She remembered a poem she read many years ago.

MAY THE SUN RISE IN FRONT OF ME

MAY THE RAIN FALL BEHIND ME

AND THE WIND FOLLOW ME

MAY THE ANGELS GUARD MY TRAVELS

FOR THEY KNOW THE ROAD AHEAD OF ME.

Who is the father, Sophia?

Sophia didn’t like to be confronted by anyone, especially by Norman.

“I don’t think it’s any of your business, who is the father of my baby daughter, Isabella.”

“I have a right to ask, Sophia. We were dating at the time you got pregnant. Is she my baby, too?”

“No, and don’t ask me again.”

Sophia started to cry and stood up from the chair she was seated on and was ready to end the meeting between Norman and her.

He saw that he upset her and he came over and hugged her.

“I’m sorry, Sophia, but I had to know and put the rumors to rest at work. There’s been so much gossiping at the Embassy.”

“Let them gossip. I don’t care. Isabella is my responsibility, so let’s leave it at that, Norman.”

“Fine, for now, but this conversation is not over. We need you back working at the Embassy, as soon as possible. Your leave is over as of right now.”

But, but it can’t be. Who says it’s over? I still have a few more weeks.”

“I say it’s over because I am your new boss.”

“Since when?”

“Since yesterday. I was promoted even though my bosses were asking questions about you and the baby.”

“So, that’s why you are stopping by to visit this afternoon. To tell me to get back to work.

How dare you and those stodgy old bosses of yours. I quit. I quit,”

“Quit? Are you insane? How can you support your baby?”

“I have sources. Now, get out, Norman.”

“Have it your way, Sophia. Good-bye and good luck.”

Constance Dole answered her smart phone which was sitting

next to her at the table.

Glancing at the number before saying her cheery HELLO, Constance saw it was her ex husband, Duncan.

“I certainly hope you are in a better mood today, my dear ex husband.”

“Oh, cut the crap, Constance. I’m always in a good mood.”

“I’m laughing now. Let me sit back down before I keel over. So, what do you want?”

“I need to talk with you about that missing lab worker.”

“OK, I’m listening, continue.”

“Not over the phone. Can we meet somewhere?”

“Hmmm. You can over here this afternoon, my Wine Club is meeting in the garden to sample new wines being introduced this Fall.”

“You want me over at your place so I can met a bunch of crazy wine enthusiasts?”

“Yes, you might enjoy yourself. Besides what do you do all day in the country?”

“How many bottles of wine do you want me to bring?”

“Duncan, that is very generous of you, but don’t bring any wine, my group has a sophisticated taste for their wine.”

“I’ll catch the afternoon train to Paris, see you in a couple of hours and Constance, thank you.”

Constance hung up the call and walked back into her kitchen, humming as she moved about.

“Like old times, maybe.”

“Sorry, Connie, did you say something?”

“No, Greta, just thinking out loud.”

Anthony dreaded making that phone call to his boss

at the U. S. Department of Energy.

When he signed on with the Department he was still in college; young and foolish. He didn’t really know what he was signing up for except that he needed money. They lorded him with promises of money and an opportunity to travel, of course at the Department’s expense. At that time in his young life, he was upset with his parents, who didn’t spend much time with him. Anthony cut them out of his college days as they were too busy working at their jobs at British Intelligence to notice. Besides, he didn’t want to keep asking them for money and by joining a U.S. Department, he would have his independence. It was also, his way of getting back at them for their absence over the years.

“Hello, Anthony, so good to hear from you. It’s been a long time.”

“Hello, Mr. Harris.  Yes, it’s been a few years. Sorry, but there hasn’t been much to report. That is until now.”

“Really,  Anthony and what could that be?”

“Is about a missing lab worker at TRACK laboratories here in Paris.”

“Go on..what’s her name?”

“How did you know it was a woman?”

“We know more than you know.”

“So, Mr. Harris, if that’s the case, it’s nice talking with you. Good-bye.”

Anthony felt guilty about hanging up on Mr. Harris but he was upset with his know it all attitude. He wasn’t in the mood for a bureaucrat in Washington DC to make light of the situation.

He wanted to know where was Melody Myers.

Why did she just pick up and leave him at the table in the café?

Was she in trouble?

How could he find her?

So many questions and very few answers.

You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintery light. But you knew there would always be the spring, as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person died for no reason.”–Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast.

Duncan Dole closed the book he was reading and made a call
to his ex-wife, Constance.
It was time to get back to work.

Anthony found himself on the wrong side of the tracks...

What secrets he kept from his parents. He hoped they wouldn’t mind that he was playing Russian Roulette with his life. After all, didn’t his own parents do the same when he was a child and beyond. Anthony was accustomed to danger. In fact, it was what he lived for in his adult life.

When he met Melody Myers, he was hoping for a stable life with a woman who would love him and accept his career and lifestyle.

But everything went off TRACK.

Could he pull it back?

Was it too late?
