Chapter 1
Misty Mars sat, on the deserted beach, alone. She had saved a beach chair for her new found lover, Morse, but he was a no show at the last minute. Misty flew to the Caribbean with the hopes of having a romantic fling with an older gentleman.
She met him a few weeks before in a local bar downtown Chicago. The bar was centrally located in her neighborhood. That night, they both hit it off from the start and Misty spent the night with Morse, not knowing who he was or even if he was married. She didn’t care; she was looking for romance. Just one night with a handsome man, who treated her like a princess. Morse had all the qualities she was looking for; older, handsome, tall, well dressed and of course, expensive shoes. The conversation and cocktails flowed all night. He was quite a talker, a smooth talker.
In morning, Misty left his apartment at dawn and crawled into her own bed with her cat, Oscar. Ahhh, the memories of the night lingered with her.
Love? Was love possible again for her?
Her last boyfriend, Charles, left her and moved to Arizona without warning. She thought they were both in love with each other but it turned out that Charles was just passing his time until a very rich older woman turned his head.
Proof…he was gone.
One evening Misty was out drinking with a few buddies from the Bureau, when Roberts name came up in the conversation. One agent called Roberts one of the most wanted men on their list. So far, they didn’t have any luck capturing him.
She confided in them about meeting a guy named Morse Roberts in a local pub in downtown. They laughed at her and said that was impossible. He didn’t hang out in dives.
Misty didn’t want to look like a fool in front of her men friends, so she just laughed it off.
When she went home that evening, she did some research and found out that her Morse Roberts was one and the same.
Wanted by the FBI.
Misty made a call to her boss in Washington DC where she worked as a freelance Intelligence agent.
They gave her the go ahead to continue to play out a scenario with Roberts not thinking too much would transpire from her escapades with him.
So, as the weeks went by, Misty was set up to see Morse a few more times at the local bar. She knew she was being monitored by her DC Agency but she didn’t mind.
Then, Morse took her to an expensive restaurant for dinner one night. Misty was not expecting what he proposed to her next. He asked her to meet him in the Caribbean for a few days, of course, there was a first class ticket and hotel accommodations provided.
Morse slipped her five one hundred dollar bills under the table. Misty chuckled as she put the bills in her red handbag and snapped it shut. She was never one to pass up money or a free trip.
Misty readily accepted his offer.
She was in need of a vacation and besides Chicago was getting hit with tons of snow that winter. It was a good break from her everyday life and friends.
She took advantage of every opportunity when it came to a vacation. Misty knew that the intelligence agency, where she worked , didn’t allow much free time, they kept her busy with assignments.
Even her friends didn’t know what she did for a living. They saw Misty living in an expensive condo with fine furnishings and was constantly traveling. Misty was always the first one to loan her girlfriends money and didn’t even ask for it back. She would throw parties on a wimp, dance all night at a club downtown Chicago until dawn. That was who Misty Mars was to her friends; fun loving adventurer.
Sometimes Misty would ask herself, “what am I doing with my life?”
What she was doing for a job was none of their business. She paid her own bills and she came and went as she pleased. The Agency was an excellent outlet for her. Misty was highly overpaid for her work with the Agency. Her assignments to foreign countries were TOP SECRET. It didn’t matter to her what assignment she received because it was always exciting and dangerous work.
It was what she lived for these days since she was still single and looking for love.
CHAPTER 2
That evening, Misty answered her smart phone while getting ready for dinner.
“Hello?”
“Misty, how is it going? Has our target shown up?”
It was David Davidson, Director of the intelligence agency for the U.S. government in Washington DC, and her boss.
“David, no not yet, but I’m hopeful.”
“Misty, we still can’t believe how lucky you got in making the connection with Roberts in Chicago. You are good, I have to hand it to you. Just don’t blow this for us. This a great opportunity for you.”
‘You mean, a great opportunity for the Agency, David.”
“OK, OK, we are both lucky. But if he doesn’t show up by morning, I could use you at another assignment, on a near by island.”
“What could be so darn important? Are we going to war?”
“Nothing that dramatic. When can you get to St. Thomas……?”
“Tomorrow morning. Is that soon enough?”
“What about tonight? Please, Misty.”
“No, David, I’m putting my high heels down..no and no.”
“Okay. Tomorrow and be careful where you put those high heels tonight. I need you somber and alert. Do you understand me?”
“Yes, sir.” Misty hung up the phone and stuck her tongue out at David. It was a good thing he didn’t call from the computer on a video chat. He would see her dressed in a flowing red dress with matching stiletto high heels
and drinking champagne from the bottle.
“Cheers, David, this bottle is for you because it’s going on the Agency’s expense account.”
My, My, what would he think or say next, as Misty twirled around in her room until she was dizzy.
Misty didn’t care what David would think. She had an affair with David a few years ago but their relationship was over. David had ended up marrying another agent, Ginger and they seemed happy. However, he was still her boss at the Agency, so she had to tread lightly if she wanted to keep her job.
Misty was single and free. Just the way she liked it, well most of the time.
Chapter 3
Misty was going to be happy tonight and drink until the early morning.
Maybe, dance too.
Whatever she would do it would be on her time.
Was the clock ticking? Tick, Tock….
Misty was enjoying a cocktail at the hotel bar and looking around for some company.
At the entrance of the bar, someone noticed her immediately.
Without hesitation, he came over to Misty.
“My, is this a pleasant surprise.”
“Why it’s he infamous Sam Houston. What are you doing here?”
Sam Houston happened to be one of the top agents with The Agency. He’s rarely seen by other agents in the field. They have only seen his picture in the halls of the Agency in DC and heard the stories of his patriotism..
This was the first time Misty Mars had the pleasure of meeting him in person. She was in ere of him immediately; young, handsome and physically fit. But Misty was suspicious of him being on the same island with her. What was Sam Houston up to?
Sam moved closer to Misty’s bar stool, looked over the room
and said,
“I’m working. How about you?”
“I’m on vacation until midnight.”
“Really? What’s going to happen after midnight, my lovely Misty?”
“Now, Sam, my love, if I told you that, you wouldn’t get any sleep tonight.”
“Is that a promise?”
Misty gave Sam one of those looks.
Sam saw that look but challenged her anyway. Oh, how Sam enjoyed a challenge, especially when it came to a pretty woman.
“Sam, didn’t I read that your wife, Cinnamon, just had a baby?”
“Yes, yes, she did. But what does that have to do with us?”
“Okay, then, nothing at all. Do you have plans for dinner tonight?”
“I’m having dinner with you, Misty. Let’s see where the evening will take us. By the way, I love that red dress you are wearing and those stilletos are dangerous.”
Sam kissed Misty on her cheek and then went to make dinner reservations in the restaurant.
Leaving Misty to ponder what was going on with Agent Houston.
Why was he on the same island and paying her compliments?
Chapter 4
Morning came too quickly for Misty. She looked around her room,
and found herself alone.
Alone, again. It started, it ended. That was her life.
Would it ever change?
Misty ordered room service for one; then crawled out of bed with
a throbbing headache.
What did she do last night?
She needed some fresh air and a large cup of black coffee.
She promised David that if Morse didn’t show up this morning, she would be on another assignment on a different island later today but
she wasn’t in the mood to rush to get back to him..
Maybe, in a couple of hours from now, she would make out that “no show” report.
Misty was still enjoying her short but ever so sweet vacation.
Her smart phone rang, but she didn’t pick up the phone call. She was
lost in her memories of last night.
Chapter 5
The Beach.
A Good Book.
Plenty of sunshine makes Misty a happy woman.
The waiter brought Misty a large slice of watermelon
to munch on while she laid on the sand.
She checked her watch.
Was it time to go?
No, it wasn’t time, she wanted to
read one more chapter in her
mystery novel.
She was right at a good spot in her book
when she heard footsteps in the sand.
“Hello, the front desk told me that I would
find you on the beach.”
Misty dropped her book and was staring
at Morse.
“What nice surprise. When did you get in?”
“Just now. Did you miss me?”
“Yes, of course I did. But you a day late.”
“Does that make a difference?”
“No. Please sit next to me and let’s order
a few cocktails to celebrate your arrival to the island.”
“Wonderful idea. Champagne or Rum?”
“You pick, Morse.”
Not too far away was Sam Houston
observing the two together on the beach.
Last night was a distant memory that ended too quickly for Sam.
Chapter 6
After a few cocktails, Misty wasn’t feeling anything but happy.
Morse was keeping her busy with drink after drink. She lost track
of time. When she did realize that she should be calling into the Agency to maker her report, but instead
she just laughed it off.
The Agency could wait on her because she reasoned to herself
that it was her vacation and the Agency was taking unfair advantage of her.
But not this time.
Misty was enjoying her time on the beach with Morse.
Morse was having a good time, too.
“Morse, you didn’t tell me why you arrived late to the island?”
“Don’t worry, my love, sometimes my business gets in the way.
But, I’m here now with you. Just enjoy and don’t ask me too many questions.”
Sam was still hanging around the beach area, pretending to read a book. He had a straw hat on with his dark glasses. He was sure that Misty had not noticed him listening to their conversation.
He thought, “Yeah, don’t ask me any questions, my foot. This guy was a fraud.”
Chapter 7
It was evening in Washington DC and David had not heard from
Misty all day. She didn’t arrive in Saint Thomas as they discussed.
He was upset when he went home for dinner with Ginger.
“You don’t look so happy this evening. What’s wrong?”
“Ginger, don’t ask me. I had a busy day at The Agency and plans were not followed through. What’s for dinner?”
“French or Italian?”
“Doesn’t matter. As long as you are with me tonight.”
“Oh, but David, I can’t stay and have dinner with you. I made plans to see
a movie with my girl friends.”
“Oh, Ginger, again. That’s the third time this week. I want my wife back.”
Ginger kissed her husband, David and told him that dinner was on the kitchen counter. It was Italian. As she raced out the front door.
David sat down in the kitchen and opened the delivery bag from the local
Italian restaurant in Georgetown and pulled out his dinner. He wasn’t pleased
with having to eat alone, again.
Maybe, after he ate he would go to the Club for a drink. He was in need of company and Ginger was out doing her own thing with her girlfriends. He would do the same.
Chapter 8
Sam Houston waited, patiently, for the love birds to emerge
from their suite.
Was he jealous?
Or was she just doing her job?
With a cigar and a drink in his hand, he continued to wait.
After two hours, Misty and Morse came out of their hideaway suite to be
face to face with Sam Houston.
“Well, Mr. Houston what are you up to this evening?”
“Misty, I was just enjoying the island scenery and you?”
She quickly recovered from her surprise of seeing Sam. Why was he still around?
Misty introduced Morse to Sam.
“Morse, nice meeting you. What brings you to this island?”
“Sam, I’m on vacation with Misty. And you?”
“Oh, I’m just trying to get a suntan.”
Misty could tell that there was tension between the two men.
Sam didn’t seem like the jealous type but she could be wrong.
“Sam, why don’t you join us for a drink at the bar.”
“But, my love, he already has a drink. Maybe, another time, Mr. Houston.”
“Yes, maybe, another time, Morse. Good night you two.” Sam walked away from the couple without further conversation. He knew that Morse wanted Misty all to himself but so did Sam want the same thing.
Would Sam Houston get another chance to be with Misty, alone?
Misty was wondering the same thoughts about Sam. She tried to keep her focus on her assignment and right now that was to make Morse comfortable with her so he would trust her.
Misty and Morse walked over to
the hotel dining room for dinner.
Chapter 9
After dinner, Misty and Morse took a stroll along the beach.
Morse was a wonderful gentleman;
smart, witty, successful and of course, very good looking for an older man.
So, why was Misty’s thoughts were going back to the night before?
Where was Sam Houston?
Was the Agency upset with her continuing her so-called vacation?
Misty waited for the phone call from David.
It didn’t come.
Her thoughts turned back to Morse as they both
walked together, hand and hand.
Misty was smiling and happy.
She felt as if she was in a dream.
A long lovely dream.
Sam Houston had stationed himself along the beach
with a drink in his hand.
Why was he drinking?
Sometimes he hated his job which caused him to drink.
He finally gave up and went back to his room.
He was calling it a night.
Tomorrow was another day.
He would make a report in the morning
to the Agency.
Chapter 10
Ginger was not happy with her life right now. She wanted a baby with David but he wasn’t having any part of it. They had made an agreement when they got married that there would be no children. Ginger agreed to it. But, now, she had a change of heart. Her best friend, Cinnamon just had a baby. She was jealous in a way but happy for Cinnamon and Sam Houston.
When Ginger came home from the movies, David was still up and waiting for her.
“How was the movie?”
“Boring. Nothing to write a good review about. Why are you still up?”
“Ginger, I missed you.”
“David, I’m tired, let’s get some sleep.”
David knew what that meant. So, he turned off the light on his side
of the bed and crawled under the blankets. Ginger’s rejection stung him.
Maybe he needed a mini vacation, alone, to a tropical island.
He made plans to discuss a trip with his staff in the morning.
Chapter 11
In the morning, Misty found a white rose at her suite’s door.
She looked up and down the hall…no one around…just a single
white rose.
She knew what a white rose represents: White roses are traditionally associated with marriages and new beginnings, but their quiet beauty has also made them a gesture of remembrance. When the occasion calls for reverence, whether stately or somber, a white rose is a perfect way to say, “I’m thinking of you.”
So, who was thinking of Misty this morning?
Surely not Morse, he left her suite late last night.
New beginnings?
Misty picked up the white rose and carried it inside her room. She found a water glass and filled it with water and put the white rose into the water. She smiled.
The mystery white rose.
What did it tell her?
Her smile got bigger. She threw on a pair of jeans and a sexy top, grabbed her sandals and
went looking for Sam Houston.
Chapter 12
Misty walked to a nearby café for a latte. She needed some time to think. But she was really hoping to find Sam out and about. It was a beautiful morning.
The seagulls were singing.
And so was Misty.
After finishing her coffee, she started to walk back to the hotel.
In the distance, she saw Sam.
As he approached her, she got excited.
“Good morning, Miss Mars, what brings you out here so early in the morning?”
“Good morning to you, Mr. Houston. Oh, I was just walking to get some
exercise.”
“I thought that maybe, you were looking for me.”
“Oh, Mr. Houston, you flatter yourself. Besides, you are a married man.”
“Yes, Miss Mars, I’m am married and married to my job.”
“Oh, I see. Well, then you wouldn’t know who goes around the
hotel giving out white roses?”
“Hmmm, white rose? Sounds serious.”
“I hope it is serious.”
(to be continued)
Chapter 13
Back in Washington DC, David called his staff together for a meeting.
“I’m thinking of going into the field to check on a couple of our agents. What are your thoughts?”
A staff member, Lisa, asked David, “How long will you be gone, sir?”
“A week, maybe longer”
Another staff member, Michael spoke up, “Who is your target, sir?”
“Sam Houston and Misty Mars.”
“Is there a reason, sir?” asked Linda, another staff member.
“Do I need a reason?”
They all echo, “No.”
“Good, then I’ll put Marie, in temporary charge, of you all here in the office.”
“When are you leaving, sir?”
“Tomorrow.”
Chapter 14
Sam Houston was working….
Misty Mars was on her unofficial working vacationing…
The island had a strange effect on two agents.
Morse was sleeping late into the morning. He called Misty for a lunch date.
“I hope you don’t have plans for lunch, my dear.”
“No, I didn’t make any plans, except, I did promise Sam
I would go sailing with him later today.”
“Meet me downstairs at noon and we will have lunch together.”
“Okay, I’ll see you at noon, Morse.”
“Meet me on the hotel terrace at noon and we will have lunch together.”
“I would like that, Morse.”
Misty met up with Morse for lunch on the terrace
overlooking the sky blue sea.
It was a beautiful day and Misty was enjoying herself.
However, her lunch date with Morse didn’t go as planned.
He became possessive of Misty and told her not to go sailing with Sam.
She told him that she would do as she pleased and he had no rights to her.
His voice became loud at the table and the other guests started to look
in their direction.
Misty pushed her chair from the table and started to stand up and
leave the restaurant when Morse grabbed her arm, forcing her to sit back down.
“Let go of my arm.”
“You are making a scene, my dear, it’s unbecoming of you.”
“I think the lady told you to let go of her arm.
If you don’t, I’ll throw you over this terrace.”
Misty whirled around to see David Davidson standing next to her.
“David? What are you doing here?”
“Helping out a lady in distress.”
Morse let go of Misty and sat down.
Morse’s body guard, who was keeping a low profile,
up until now, came quickly to the table.
But Morse, waved him off.
“So, who is this white knight, my love?”
“He’s a friend, a very good friend. Now, if you will
excuse us, we are leaving.”
David escorted Misty out of the restaurant
under the staring looks and whispers of the
other patrons.
Chapter 15
David and Misty walked outside after the argument with Morse.
She was shaking so David put his arm around her
and guided her in a lounge area where they could talk.
“You are doing a terrific job here. Keep it up, Misty.”
“Keep it up? With him?”
“Yes, we got him where we want him.”
“I don’t know, David, he’s unpredictable.”
“No, he just wanted to push you to see what you would do. You stood up to him. He respects that in a person. He’s not looking for a bimbo.”
“Are you sure?”
“Trust me. He will be sending you flowers, champagne
and a gift from Tiffany’s before this day ends. He trusts you.
It’s going as planned. You just landed the biggest fish for the Agency.
Many other government agencies have been after this guy for years. But, you, Misty have him and you will bring him in for us. You know there’s a reward involved.”
“Really? How much, David?”
About $250,000. And it will be all yours.”
“I like the sound of that, David. I might have to take another vacation.”
“Oh, not so fast, let’s finish this assignment, first.”
Chapter 16
David Davidson and Misty continued their conversation walking to the front desk where David was going to check into his suite.
“Where’s Sam Houston?”
“I’m not sure. Why?”
“He’s suppose to be babysitting you.”
Misty laughed, “Is that what he was sent to do, David? Babysit me?”
“Yes, I thought you needed extra protection. I wouldn’t want anything to happened to my favorite agent.”
“You really mean, your former lover. So how is that wife of yours, Ginger?”
“It’s complicated, right now. She wants a baby and I don’t. Can image me a father at this age?”
“Yes, I can, David. You would make a great dad and besides
You are not that old. You are still young.”
“Thanks for the compliment but I’m in my 60’s.”
“You look as young as Sam Houston.”
“Ahh, Misty, I love you.” David kissed her on the cheek and held her a little longer.around her waist.
“Oh, sure you do. Is that why you throw me over for Ginger?”
“You knew I was seeing Ginger for a couple of years.”
“Yeah, and then she went to Texas to be with Sam Houston, as I remember correctly.”
“Yes, Ginger went to Texas but I rescue her in Hawaii, when she got shot.”
“That was when you dumped me and proposed to Ginger. You know, I have not seen you in two years and then you magically appear here on the island. Are you rescuing me, now, David?”
“Come on, Misty, play nice. Let’s get a drink. All of this talk has left me thirsty.”
Chapter 17
An afternoon of sailing for Sam Houston was pure enjoyment.
Misty went to the dock to meet Sam and have a fun day of sailing.
“Permission to come aboard, Captain Sam.”
“Permission granted.” Sam laughed “What took you so long to get over to the marina?”
“Well, do you want the good, bad or ugly?”
“Just tell me, Misty. What’s going on?”
“Our boss, David has arrived on the island.”
“Seriously? David is here?”
“Of course I’m serious.”
“Throw me that line, we are shoving off. Watch your head on the boom.”
“I know, Sam. I’m a sailor, too, you know.”
“Good, I could use some help.”
“Aye, Aye, captain.” As Misty gave Sam a salute and then found herself a comfortable place to sit. All the while watching Sam maneuver the boat away from the dock and into the marina and then out to sea.
What a lovely day for a sail. Misty was pleased with her day so far.
Now, she needed some time with Sam.
Once under sail, Sam came closer to where Misty was sitting.
“How about a beer?”
“Is that the best you can do, Sam?”
“What’s wrong with beer? I know it’s not champagne.”
Misty smiled at Sam and agreed to a beer.
After a few beers, Misty was talkative. Sam just listened.
“David told me that you were here on the island to babysit me.”
“Yes, it started out that way, but I don’t think I have to babysit you, Misty.
You are doing just fine on your own.” Another big smile from Sam.
Damn, Misty thought, he’s good looking. Why didn’t I notice him a few years ago?
Before he got married. She felt good being around Sam.
The sun was shining down on her face, so she turned
away from the sun to protect her eyes.
Sam threw her a baseball cap to put on.
She smiled and thanked him. He seemed to know what she needed
even before she did. Misty adjusted the brim on the cap and
flashed another smile back at Sam.
“You look good in that Yankee’s cap. Are you a fan of baseball?”
“I love baseball. I go as often as I can in Chicago.”
“I’m a big fan of baseball and football. You should catch a game with us in
Texas, sometime.”
Misty looked hard at Sam. Why was he being so nice to her? Then she decided to ask
him that question that men hate.
“Are you happy, Sam?”
“Don’t ask a man if he’s happy, especially went he is enjoying himself and sailing.”
“Is that an answer to my question?”
“Not really; let’s move on. It’s a nice day and I’m sailing
with a beautiful woman. Tell me, what’s your next step with this Morse Roberts? Are you taking him down?”
“I’m taking him to jail, where he belongs. He’s one of the
biggest crime bosses in the country.
The government wants to make an example of him.”
“Have you and David made a plan to do just that?”
“Not yet. But I have a few ideas. David and I are meeting later tonight. Do you want to join us?”
“Maybe, I will. What time?”
“Eleven. Hotel Bar.”
“We have a date, Misty.”
Chapter 18
The sun was setting and Sam sailed the boat back into
the marina harbor.
It had been a long afternoon but Sam was relaxed. Misty was contend and wished that they could keep sailing…forever.
Docking the boat and ties the lines, Sam reached out his hand to help Misty off the boat. She took hold of Sam’s hand and almost slipped on the wet surface of the boat. Sam caught her just in time. Misty looked at him and before she knew it, Sam kissed her. It was a short kiss, but it was a kiss. Misty didn’t know how to properly response so she continued to exit the boat.
“Thank you, Sam, I had a wonderful time sailing with you. I didn’t know you were an excellent sailor.”
“I have a passion for sailing among other things.”
“Yes, I see. I think we better leave it to sailing only.”
“I’m sorry, if I was out of line. Forget it. I was just helping another sailor in distress.”
“It’s OK, Sam. I better get back to the hotel and make arrangements for dinner. I’m sure Morse is looking for me. Either to kill me or love me.”
“Let’s hope it’s the latter, Misty. I need you around to complete the assignment. I don’t want to lose you on my watch.”
Misty was off the boat and starting to walk up the dock when she turned and looked back at Sam and smiled and waved to him.
“See you at 11 tonight?”
“Yes, Misty, I’ll be there. It’s a job requirement.”
Misty continued her walk up the dock and thought to herself, “a job requirement? Was the kiss a job requirement, too?”
Chapter 19
Misty made it back to her hotel safely, after an afternoon of sailing with
Sam Houston, her agent partner. His kiss was still on her mind and lips.
She checked her messages on her hotel phone;
there were plenty of messages from Morse. He was sorry for his behavior
at the restaurant earlier in the afternoon. Morse wanted to have dinner with
Misty and explain and makeup for his temper and outburst.
She avoided his calls and took a shower instead.
When she opened the door, she was presented with two dozen red roses and
a bottle of French champagne, chilled and ready to drink.
Misty accepted the gifts from the bell hop, tipped him and had him open
the bottle of champagne. Ahhh, it was sweet and she let the bubbles tickle her tongue.
The phone rang and this time she answered it.
“Misty, I thought I lost you at sea. Glad you got back. Are we having dinner tonight?”
“Morse, yes, I’m back. It was a lovely day. But of course, we are having dinner together. And, oh, the roses are beautiful and the champagne, divine. Thank, thank you very much.”
“It’s my pleasure, my love. I have another surprise for you when we have dinner tonight. See you at 8 pm in the hotel lobby?”
“Yes, I’ll be there at 8 pm.”
Misty hung up the hotel phone and sipped on her glass of champagne and thought to herself, “yes, I’m sure you have a surprise for me tonight; boy do I have a surprise for you Mr. Criminal man Roberts.”
She walked over to her window and looked out and wondered where Sam was this evening.
Probably eating dinner alone. How she wished her dinner date was with him and not with Morse.
Oh, what an agent has to do and put up with for the sake of freedom.
Misty finished drinking the rest of the bottle of champagne before 8 pm; now she was ready to perform. It was her job and she knew how to do it well.
Chapter 20
Sam got back to his hotel, dog tired, so he jumped in the shower
to refresh himself.
Sailing, Sailing…
Misty, Misty…
His tried to turn his thoughts to the assignment on the island but Misty kept popping back into his head. Why her? Why now? There was something about her he really liked and admired. She was independent, strong, funny, entertaining…the list goes on. Sam decided to get a drink at the poolside bar at the hotel. Maybe, after a few drinks, he would stop thinking about Misty.
Less than an hour later, David joined Sam at the bar.
“Hello David, I heard you were on the island. This must be a big one.”
“Yes, Sam it is, we can’t let this assignment go South. Misty seems to have a handle on his guy, Roberts. What do you think?”
“What do I think about Misty or does she know how to bring this guy in for us?”
“There’s something you not saying. What is it?”
“David, how do you keep it straight without going across the line?”
“If you mean, me personally, I don’t. We are men and we are human. This job takes a toll on all of us. Our relationships suffer, sometimes. This is serious, Sam?”
“I don’t know. I’m weighing it in my mind.”
“She’s talented and beautiful, it’s a dangerous combination. I know from past experience with Misty. I was in love with her once.”
“So, you and Misty were a item. Good information. But you married Ginger.”
“Yes, I did. But I still have feelings for Misty. That’s why I’m here, to make sure she doesn’t get killed on this one.”
“Do you think it’s possible?
“Sam, we are in dangerous waters here with this crime boss. Misty is setting him up and then we can go in and get the documents we need to nail his ass.”
“Misty said you were meeting tonight at 11 pm. Mind if I join you?”
“Be my guest, Sam. Now let’s have another drink and order dinner out here by the pool. It’s a beautiful evening and we have a lot of work to do.
Chapter 21
Misty met Morse in the hotel lobby at 8 pm.
Morse smiled and immediately went up to Misty and
kissed both of her cheeks.
“Darling, you look stunning tonight. I hope you like surprises.”
“What girl doesn’t?”
“Come then, our limousine is waiting.”
“Where are we going?”
“No, no, all in good time, precious.”
The couple walked outside and got into a black limousine.
Morse’s bodyguard was following the two,
which Misty observed when she looked over her shoulder.
Something was not right.
Misty could feel it, she couldn’t panic, now.
Stay calm she told herself.
Almost wishing she had not accepted Morse’s
invitation to dinner tonight.
Where was Morse taking her?
All of her instincts, said it was wrong.
Her heart was beating fast, but not in a good way.
She turned her attention to Morse.
He had a smug look on his face.
He was not talking to Misty, he was giving the limo driver
directions to an air field.
Again, Misty panicked.
She was thinking of a way out of the car before it
came to a complete stop.
Her agent training came back to her.
Too late, they had just arrived at an isolated section of the island.
She peered out the window.
A small single engine plane was sitting near them.
“Is this my surprise?”
“No, this is, my dear.”
Misty fell onto the limo’s floor.
Everything went dark.
Chapter 22
It was past 11 pm and Misty had not show up at the hotel bar to meet David and Sam.
They both sipped on martinis and nibbled away on snacks waiting for Misty.
“Did you call her room, Sam?”
“Yes, I did. I didn’t get an answer.”
“Something went wrong. Maybe, Roberts found out who she really was.” David was not liking what was happening.
“How could he, she used an alias, right?”
“Yes, she did. We made sure her background history matched what she told him.
Oh, for God sake, I hope she is alright. I’ll never forgive myself. This was all my idea, she seemed to know what she was doing.”
“David, I’m sure she’s OK. I’ll check with the front desk. Maybe, someone will
remember the time they came back from dinner. Stay here. This shouldn’t take long.”
A few minutes, Sam came back to the bar to report to David.
“Tell me, don’t just stand there. What time did they come back from dinner?”
“David, they didn’t come back to the hotel. I ran into the limo driver, he said he
took them to an airfield at the end of the island.”
“So, what does that mean? Was Misty kidnapped?”
“Yes, I think she was kidnapped, David.”
Chapter 23
Misty was blindfolded and led on to the small airplane.
Morse was carrying two small suitcases which he stowed under his seat on the aircraft.
He sat next to Misty and gently patted her leg. “So, you thought I was that dumb, Misty? I don’t know which government agency you work for but you won’t be taking me into custody. Not tonight, not ever.”
“What are you going to do to me?”
“The usual, my assistant, will kill you. He will make it look
Like an accident. That’s how we handle these situations.”
“Where are we going?” Misty was trying to keep him talking because she felt better knowing here fate in advance besides, she was recording the entire conversation in a small device that the Agency provided her; it was state of the art. It not only recorded, it was a tracking device just in case she was kidnapped. She knew that the Agency would find her location. She wanted Morse to tell her as much as he could about his operation in Chicago and elsewhere.
Morse talked and talked. He figured he had nothing to lose, she would be dead in a few hours. He humored her. Which delighted Misty. All the while, she silently prayed and thought of Sam.
What if that was going to be her last kiss. Sam’s kiss that she just blew off. He will never know how she felt about him.
More prayers while the idiot keep talking and talking.
Washington DC, can you hear me?
Chapter 24
David was angry at himself for letting Misty take on
this dangerous assignment.
Sam was angry because he was suppose “babysit” Misty; he let her down and the Agency.
Neither man was happy at this point about losing an agent.
David’s smart phone went off with a text message:
Sir,
We got a reading on Misty’s tracking device.
Hold for more details.
DC
The look on David’s face told Sam a story. One he wanted to hear.
“So, are you going to keep me in suspense?”
“Our agent, Misty, just surfaced. DC is tracking her and picking up the conversation she is having with Morse Roberts.”
“So, she’s smarter that you thought, David. She install that new Agency receiver/tracker on herself before she left the hotel. She must have suspected something. Very smart agent.”
“Oh stop with the sarcasm, Sam. I knew she was intelligent and would keep her wits about her. More than I say about you, sometimes.”
“You think I can’t work and have fun too?”
“Sorry, Sam. I know you are a professional. Now, let’s
go get our girl.”
Chapter 25
After a few phone calls, David and Sam boarded their private plane bound for Chicago.
The Agency had dispersed agents to an airfield in Chicago
to meet Morse Roberts’ plane; hopefully Misty was still alive and on board.
As the small plane landed, the agents were well hidden. Their plan was to take Roberts by surprise and arrest him. Now, they could add the charge of kidnapping a federal agent to their long list of crimes. This charge should stick and he would be prosecuted for the crime.
The local field agents arrested Morse Roberts. He didn’t resist arrest and walked off of the plane like he was a celebrity all smiles.
But, it was Sam Houston, who throw him down on the ground and cuffed him. “She better not be harmed or you will have hell to pay.”
“Don’t worry, your precious lover is fine.” As Morse shot a mean look at Sam.
“Good.” Sam signaled the other agents to take Morse off his hands and into their custody.
Sam looked over at David before he took a step up the stairs to the plane to check on Misty.
David nodded and smiled.
That was Sam’s signal and he raced up the stairs to find Misty.
She was seated in her seat next to the window and saw the whole arrest. She was relieved. It was over. Then she spotted Sam coming down the aisle, he was rescuing her after all.
Misty got up and ran towards Sam; jumped on him and kissed him. This time it was not a short kiss. They took their time kissing. “You saved me, Sam.”
“No, Misty, you saved yourself with that new Agency tracking device. You are one smart agent, my dear.”
“Whatever, you say, Sam.”
“Misty, you know this is my job. What we shared on that island the first night, stays on the island. This is not going to continue. I’m going home to my wife and family in Texas. You are staying here in Chicago. You know how it works, it’s an assignment. The assignment is over, we go our separate ways.”
“Sam, I know that. It was your job. It was an assignment. I won’t be sitting around Chicago waiting for another white rose.”
“So we understand each other. Now, go out there and make David feel like he is your hero and he rescued him. He cares about you a great deal. Make him a lucky guy.”
Misty took another long look at Sam’s face and thought she saw a tear. No, couldn’t be. Sam Houston doesn’t cry. She kissed him one more time and went charging off of the plane to greet David.
“David, you are my hero. Thank you for saving me.” Misty hugged David and kissed him.
She doing a good job of acting out her part.
Sam watched the two from the top of the plane stairway.
He held it together just long enough and
then slipped behind the aircraft pulled out his handkerchief
and wiped away tears.
David and Misty started to walk towards the exit of the airfield when he said,
“Let’s go get a drink, just the two of us, Misty.”
“Where to, David?”
“Isn’t your apartment close by?”
David had seen Sam and Misty’s long kiss through
the outside window of the plane;
he knew there was something between them.
But he wasn’t going to ask any questions.
It was a job and the assignment was complete.
Misty would be richer and Sam would have a broken heart.
After all, they were agents and that’s how it begins and ends.
Chapter 26
It was a couple of months later, Misty was out celebrating with her friend, Liz at a Chicago restaurant, when she received a phone call from Sam Houston.
“I know I shouldn’t be calling you, but I had to tell you how I felt about you.”
“Sam, it’s good to hear your voice.”
“Misty, I wanted to tell you that my wife, Cinnamon and I are getting a divorce.”
“Sam, I’m sorry to hear about your divorce but I must confess, the rumors have been swirling around the Agency about you…us.”
“I know, I’ve heard those same rumors, except they are not just rumors,
they are true. Misty, I was hoping to come to Chicago and see you.”
“Why Sam Houston, are you saying you have feelings for me?”
“Yes, Misty, I’m hopeless, in love with you.”
“How soon can you get to Chicago?”
“Well, if you turned your chair around, you would see I was standing
in the entrance to the restaurant.”
Misty dropped her phone on the table and looked in Sam’s direction.
There stood Sam carrying a dozen white roses and smiling.
Misty couldn’t run fast enough towards Sam.
“Sam, you are one big surprise. You know I fell in love with you
back on the island.”
“Yes, I know, Misty. Ditto for me.”
They kissed as the restaurant patrons clapped.
