James stepped out of the shower and heard laughter coming from the suite’s bedroom.

Putting on a robe, he walked into a scene of the girls and Jimmie-John jumping on the bed with Caroline on the bottom of the pile.

“Hey, are you trying to have a slumber party without me?”

“James, the children are just having some with their Mom.”

“Okay, everyone out, we need to get dressed. Will one of

you check on room service?”

“We will Daddy. Come on Jimmie-John, let the newlyweds

have some privacy.”

James handed Caroline a robe and then kissed her.

“My, I sure missed the children, James.”

“I know, they are fun to be around. You better get dressed

or you will miss breakfast, my love,”

“I was thinking more of dessert, my love,”

“Hmmmm, tempting, but you better get up, Caroline.

We only have a few hours before we need to leave for the airport.

There’s a very big snow storm ready to hit

Washington D.C., I would like to avoid it before they

close down the airport.”

“Work, work…so, you are taking a rain check on dessert, my love?”

“Noted and checked, my lovely Caroline.

So, it’s off

to Washington, we all go.”

Meanwhile, back at James’ ranch in Texas, Sam was resting at the ranch with the help of Ginger. She volunteered to care for him and James volunteered his ranch for Sam’s recovery.

“I made you some tea.”

“Thank you Ginger, you have been a lifesaver. I don’t think I could stand another night in that hospital. It was very noisy and the bright lights were killing my eyes. It’s very peaceful here on the ranch. Thanks for everything especially the fire tonight.”

“What else do you need tonight, Sam?”

“Just you, Ginger.”

“No, Sam, I’m going to bed in the guest bedroom. Just ring this little bell if you need anything. Good night, Sam.”

“Good night, Ginger.”

Ginger left Sam alone with his tea and fire. She needed time to finish her Agency report, and get her boss, David off her back. She had to figure out a way to tell him it’s over between them, besides David was married.

Her thoughts were now with Sam Houston. She would slow the relationship down between them for now until she knew it was really LOVE between them or something else.

Ginger wanted to continue to work for The Agency but she also wanted a relationship with a single man…maybe even get married.

In the distance, Ginger heard a little bell ringing…

“I most certainly did. Now, I need a place to take care of you.”

“Well, James said I could stay at his ranch since they will be in Washington DC for a few weeks. Will that work for us?”

It’s a new day in Dallas.

There was a knock on the hotel suite door. James and Caroline had not slept well all night long after the trip from Argentina. James looked at the bedside clock, it said 10 AM. He rubbed his eyes to be sure he was reading the clock correctly. The knocking continued. He got up and looked over at Caroline, she was sound a sleep and didn’t even stir. James threw on his dirty pair of jeans and the same tee shirt he wore on the trip. It was the best he could do on short notice.

James opened the door and found the twins, Jimmie-John and Julia standing in the hallway of the hotel.

“Surprise.” The children yelled to their Dad and jumped all over him.

“James, I’m sorry, but I couldn’t keep them back. They were so excited to see you.”

“Julia, that’s fine. Come in, please. Caroline is still sleeping.”

“Daddy you look terrible. Have you had your morning coffee, yet?”

“Brooke, order coffee for Dad, right away.”

Brooke quickly called room service and made a breakfast order for all of them.

“I want a cheeseburger,” Jimmie-John yelled.

“Don’t you want some breakfast, first?” James asked.

“No, just my cheeseburger with two pickles. That’s the way Grandpa Jesse like his hamburgers, too.”

James just shook his head and softly laughed, “Okay, a cheeseburger like Grandpa Jesse.”

“Julia, what about your order?”

“No thanks. The driver is waiting downstairs to take me back to the ranch. James, you look worst then Jesse did this morning. I hope you can get some more sleep.”

“Thanks, Julia, but I think this is about as much sleep I will be getting.”

While Julia and James were talking, Jimmie-John slipped in the bedroom suite to see his Mom sleeping away. He climbed into the big bed and rested his head on Caroline’s back.

She still didn’t stir an inch. After Julia left the suite, James went looking for Jimmie-John and found him sleeping next to his Mom. “Jimmie-John, let your Mom sleep.”

“Shhhh, we’re sleeping, Daddy.”

With that comment, James just shut the bedroom door and let them be alone for the time being.

The twins were busy talking and waiting  for room service to arrive.

“Daddy, you better take a shower and change those dirty clothes. You don’t want people to see you like that, especially our Mom.”

“Girls, you are so right. I’ll take a shower. Let me know when the coffee is here.”

“Oh, we order you a couple of beers, also.”

“But why? It’s not 5 O’clock yet.”

“Well, if the coffee doesn’t work, the beers will help you.”

“Who told you that?”

“Aunt Beatrice!!”

You can follow a yellow brick road or open the yellow door…

Welcome to Dallas !

James and Caroline and the gang were never so happy to see the

Dallas sky light. They were finally home.

Jesse and Grandpa Jesse had the cases of wine loaded on a van truck

to transport back to their ranch. Aunt Beatrice sat in the truck and waited for the long drive to the ranch.

Poor Sam was taken off the plane into an ambulance for a short ride to the hospital.

James and Caroline followed the ambulance to the hospital and Ginger went along with them.

James made sure that Sam was settled into his hospital room before he and Caroline left for a hotel in Dallas.

“Caroline, you know I have to be in Washington D.C. tomorrow afternoon.”

“Yes, James, do I need to make an appointment to see you?”

“You are funny, no, my love, no appointment needed. I was hoping you and the children would come to DC with me for a few weeks. I have a very nice apartment in Georgetown. You can shop the bookstores and visit Washington as a tourist. I think the twins and Jimmie-John will enjoy visiting The White House and tour the House of Representatives, plus the Senate. It will be a history lesson for them.”

Caroline knew this was not just James asking her, but telling her that he wanted her and the children in Washington. She didn’t mind the request because she could get some work out of the way when she was staying there. The Agency would appreciate the visit and give her another assignment.

“James, what a wonderful idea. Of course, we will join you.”

James kissed Caroline and continued to the hotel.

“Thank you, my love. Now, I think we should order room service and call it a night.”

BYE-BYE ARGENTINA….(Don’t cry for me…)

HELLO TEXAS !!

The entire group was overjoyed to be in the air and heading to Texas.

James asked Caroline if she was fine and her response was, “I’m happy because you are here with me, James.”

“Can I get you anything?”

“Just relax, for now.  I don’t need anything except you by my side.”

Ginger watched from afar their actions and reactions to each other. She wondered if she would ever find someone to love, forever and ever.

Jesse and Grandpa Jesse settled back for the long flight to Texas.

Aunt Beatrice started drinking cocktails as soon as the plane lifted off the ground.

Sam was in the back of the plane in pain and was hoping Ginger would come back soon to relieve his pain.

Bowman just sat by the window and read a book. He didn’t have much to do on this trip. James was safe along with Caroline. His job was easy this time.

“You know James, I was talking to Aunt Beatrice about the grape vine cuttings we took from the vineyard. She told me about the vineyards in Texas. So I, Googled on the internet, when we were waiting at the airport.

It’s fascinating information.

Texas is one of the oldest wine growing states in the US, with vines planted there more than a hundred years

before they were planted in

California or Virginia.

In the 1650s, Franciscan priests planted Mission vines in West Texas, near modern day El Paso. The vines were a necessity in the production of sacramental wine  used in the Eucharist.

The horticulturist Thomas Munson used Texas vines to create hundreds of hybrid grapes and conducted significant research in finding root stock immune to the Phylloxera epidemic, which saved the French wine industry from total ruin.

The advent of Prohibition in the United States virtually eliminated Texas’ wine industry, which didn’t experience a revival until the 1970s, beginning with the founding of Llano Estacado and Pheasant Ridge wineries in the Texas High Plains appellation  near Lubbock and the La Buena Vida winery in Springtown.

The Texas wine industry still feels the effects of Prohibition today with a quarter of Texas’ 254 counties still having dry laws on the books.”

“So, what are you saying? We should start a winery in Texas?”

“Why not James? We could bring back the growing of grapes, in form of a winery, back to Texas. It would put Texas wineries back in business in your state, Congressman. Think of the jobs you would be creating, not to mention the marketing of TEXAS wines.”

“Where would get the money to start?”

Aunt Beatrice might have been drinking but she heard every word of this conversation.

“I think it’s a fine idea. Texas wine and a winery

in our own back yard. I’m in, James.

How much do we need to get started?”

“I’m not sure, Auntie. We will need investors and..”

“Stop with the investor talk, I’m your primary investor. I want in on this deal, so I’ll give you five million dollars to start this winery. And I want Jesse and Bradley/Sam to be owners along with you James as a silent partner. Do we have a deal, James?”

“Well, Aunt Beatrice, you got a deal.”

“Just think, our own winery in Texas. Wait until I tell Jesse and Bradley.”

The aircraft touched down in  Buenos Aires and the crew, being James and Ginger, gave each other a high five and the rest of the group clapped.

Mission Accomplished. (for now)

James and Ginger exited the plane and went in search of their charter to Texas. They didn’t have to look too far because an older man approached them.

“Hello Congressman Jamison, we have been waiting for you. I’m Juan Jose. Sorry about your crew deserting you out there. I take it you are all safe?”

“We are okay except for my friend Sam Houston, he broke his leg and will need

some medical attention before we continue.”

“I’ll have a medical crew take a look at him. Do you want us to transport him to the hospital in Buenos Aires?”

James looked over at Ginger. He saw that she was shaking her head.

He took it for a no and said, “No, that will not be necessary. We would like to get him abroad our charter plane as quickly as possible.”

“Aren’t you going to make a report about what happened out there?”

“Who do you want us to make a report to?”

“The local police, of course.”

James quickly informed this person, that no WAY, were they sticking around to talk with the police.

“We want and need to get going in our plane. So, we will skip the police report for another time. My wife is ill and is expecting our baby, you see. We need to leave now. I hope you understand.”

James hated to have to lie, to this man, but under the circumstances, they couldn’t be caught in a foreign country after torching a winery. He was pulling out all the stops.

Ginger didn’t say a word, she just let James handle this situation. He had more experience in these matters and she could learn a thing or two from a pro Agent like James.

“I understand your urgency in this matter. We will forego the police report. My medical crew will take Mr. Houston and your wife abroad your charter plane immediately. Is there anything else I can do for you?”

“No, thank you very much, Mr. Jose.” James slipped him a  red envelope stuffed with  hundred dollar bills.

Juan Jose quickly put the envelope in his pocket and said, “Gracious, Congressman. Thank you for visiting our beautiful country. Come back anytime for a vacation.”

“You are welcome.”

Ginger and James walked as fast as they could to get the others on the plane without any other problems.

The cases of wine were loaded along with the wineries computers and books.

Caroline looked puzzled when the medical crew escorted her off the plane first and unto the new aircraft. But she knew something was going on and she played her part of looking ill. James stayed by her side and whispered, “We need to leave as quickly as possible.”

She understood what James was doing but had to needle him just a little, “Trouble in paradise, my love?”

“Nothing I can’t handle with a large amount of cash.”

“I see, James. Always ready for trouble.”

“I learned it all from you, my love. Now get aboard and look sick and pregnant.”

As James kissed her on the cheek and smiled and said, “I love you.”

WHICH WAY ARE WE GOING?

Ginger left the plane’s cockpit to go and check on Sam.

“Hello, Mr. Houston, how are you feeling? Any pain?”

“Pain? I’m numb, what was in that shot you gave me?”

“It’s better you don’t know. I’m glad you are still in a cheery mood.”

Ginger helped Sam get situated a little better in his seat. Aunt Beatrice tried to give Sam a cocktail but thankfully, he declined.

“Is there anything I can get you? A magazine, tea or…”

Sam smiled at Ginger and Said, “Nothing for now but maybe later, you will be going my WAY?

Now, Ginger laughed softly, and kissed Sam on the forehead.

“The only Way you are going, Mr. Houston is to the ambulance, when we land in Rio.”

“Rio? I thought we are going to Buenos Aires.?”

“Oh, we are going to Buenos Aires, did I say Rio? Sorry about that misstep.”

“I think you and James are having too much fun flying this plane.  Better watch out.”

“Sam, don’t worry, James only has eyes for his wife.”

“And who do you have eyes for Miss Way?”

“I’m looking at him, Mr. Houston.” Ginger winked at Sam. “Now, please don’t try to move too quickly until the medical crew comes abound and takes you to the next plane.”

Sam was under a heavy drug but he knew what he wanted and he knew which WAY he was going.

The takeoff was smooth with James and Ginger in the cockpit of the cargo plane.

Neither one spoke, just paid attention to the controls and before they knew it, they were flying.

“Nice work, Miss Way.”

“Ditto, Congressman.”

“Hopefully, when we change planes in Buenos Aires, we will have real pilots.”

“We are real Mr. Jamison.”

“Yes, I know that. I would prefer to be a passenger on the next leg of this trip.”

“Speaking about legs. I better check on our Sam.”

“Miss Way, before you go back to take care of Sam. Take it easy on him. He’s been through a lot lately. His marriage was rocky and then  a bitter divorce. Don’t play games with him, please.”

“I promise, I’ll be gentle. I’m getting to like him.

I didn’t figure you for a softie.”

James laughed and didn’t make a comment back to Ginger.

The Yellow Rose Saga #79

vineyard

The sun was breaking through the clouds at Jesse and Sam’s

vineyard in Argentina.

The gang had just arrived to take the last of the wine barrels

and anything else they could take before the government took over the winery in a few hours.

“Sam, just tell us what you want us to do and we will get working.”

“James, if you and Jesse will pull out the oak barrels and the cases of bottled wine from the warehouse, we should be fine.”

“How long will that take us?” Grandpa Jesse asked.

“A few hours, if we are lucky. Load them on those rolling carts

and get them in the vans. Then the vans can get the wine to the cargo plane. Any other questions?”

“No, Sam. We are on it for now.”

As James and Jesse worked at that plan.

Sam and Grandpa set out to set fire to the ranch house and the main house on the property. Sam was determined not to let the government have anything of value. He thought about torching the grape vines, but he couldn’t bring himself to do that. Especially after all of his hard work in the vineyard for years.

Meanwhile, Aunt Beatrice got busy with her shears and started

to take cuttings from the vines. Caroline followed her lead

and helped to mark each one and the type of vine

it was taken from.

Ginger watched in amazement, now everyone had a task and

it was going along quickly.

“Are you just going to watch or what?” James asked Ginger.

“What do you want me to do, make peanut butter sandwiches for everyone?”

“You can help us in the warehouse. There’s a lot of cases

of wine to save.”

“Yes, sir, Mr. Congressman. I wonder what the U.S. Government

would said about you “stealing this wine.?”

“Miss Way, as far as that is concerned, we were never here and we  didn’t steal the wine.  This winery and everything in it  belongs to Sam and Jesse. Now, if you are not going to help us, go back to the plane and make sure those pilots are  not taking off without us. We only have a few hours to finish this operation.”

“You certainly like to give orders, don’t you?”

James just smiled at her and threw her a pair of gloves.

“Okay, I’m going along.”

After an hour and a half, most of the cases of wine were transported to the vans and then on to the plane sitting on the makeshift landing field, close to the winery.

Caroline and Aunt Beatrice had snipped enough cuttings

from the grape vines and headed back to the vans to wait for James and the gang.

Sam and Grandpa Jesse had started the fire at the ranch house and then went towards the warehouse.

No, it was not a pretty sight to see, especially for Caroline who spent over a year in this place after Jimmie-John was born. Those memories came flooding back to her and how kind and generous Sam was to her and her new born son. And now, Sam had nothing, nothing at all. He was flat broke. It was such a shame to lose everything. His life was over at the Agency when he faked his death. Caroline wondered what would happen to him now.

“Caroline, are you okay?” James asked.

“Yes, just a little sad. I hate to see this place go in flames.”

“We all do, but at least we are saving the vineyard. I agree with Sam, we can’t destroy something that has been growing in this region for over a century. It won’t be right. I see you and Aunt Beatrice were busy. What are you doing with the cuttings?”

“Aunt Beatrice said we are bringing these clippings back to Texas. Hopefully, they will take root and we can start our own winery in Texas.”

“That’s a wonderful idea. Boy, she sure is on top of this operation. She’s the biggest surprise.”

“Hey, are you talking about me again, James?”

“I’m just saying, that you are the smartest one in this bunch.”

“Now, that’s more like it. Do you think it’s 5 O’clock yet?”

“No, not yet, Auntie. Come on, we need to get in the vans and get out of here.”

Sam surveyed the vineyard and made one more check of the warehouse. The others waited by the vans for Sam.

James saw a text message on his phone from Sam.

Text Message:

HELP

Sam

James yelled at Jesse for help and they both went running towards the warehouse to find Sam. As James looked over his shoulder, he saw Ginger in hot pursuit and keeping up with them. He thought, what the heck, but didn’t say anything

and he and Jesse kept running. Caroline and the others stood by the vans and waited.

The fire in the warehouse was going full blaze and it was difficult to breath and see much of anything at this point.

Sam yelled and James and Jesse followed his cries for help and they found him with a large oak barrel on top of his leg.

“Sam, what happened. Are you hurt?”

“Yes, I think my leg is broken.”

“We need to get this barrel off you leg. Hold on.”

Just then Ginger appeared with a long stick of some sort and throw it to James.

“Nice catch, Congressman.”

“What  are you wonder woman Ginger?”

“I like that name. I might have to keep it.”

“Stop talking and help us get this barrel off Sam.

“We didn’t have plans to die in Argentina today, Ginger.”

“Now, aren’t you glad The Agency sent me and I came along?”

“We should have known that you didn’t come along on this trip on your own free will.”

After pulling and pushing the barrel came loose and Jesse lifted Sam up with James’ help.

“Can you walk?”

“That’s a stupid question, my leg is broken and you want to know if I can walk.”

“Calm down, Sam. Yes, it was an idiotic question but the building is burning and we need to get the hell out of here,” James replied.

Then out of nowhere, Ginger appeared driving a golf cart,

“Get in before we all die in this place. I have a life to live, gentlemen.”

The men just laughed at Ginger and her comment and got on board the golf cart as she drove it to the van area.

“What happened, James?”

“Poor Sam got caught up in a wine barrel, broke his leg

and Ginger rescued us. So, nothing much, all in a day’s work.”

Everyone laughed but James instructed them to get in the vans and make their way to the cargo plane.

“Are you in a lot of pain?” Ginger asked.

“Yes, I am but I’ll tough it out.”

“You don’t have to tough it out, Sam. Once we get aboard the plane I have my medicine kit.”

“So, what are you saying to me, you have an aspirin or two for me?”

“Better than that, I have the really good stuff. I can shoot you up with a strong pain killer, you won’t feel a thing then until we get back in U.S. air space.”

“What are you, a doctor?”

“No, I’m a register nurse.”

“You aren’t kidding are you?”

“Nope. I’m one of The Agency’s best nurses.”

Once they got back to the cargo plane, Jesse and James helped

Sam get aboard and settled before Miss Way started her treatment on Sam.

“Now, this might sting a bit but you won’t feel anything after that. Ready?”

“I guess I don’t have a choice. Go ahead nurse Ginger.”

The look on Sam’s face told the story of how bad the shot was

for him.

“Well, your bedside manner could be better, nurse.”

“Ahhh, you wanted bedside manner, how about this?”

Ginger bent down and kissed Sam on his lips and smiled.

“Happy, now?”

“I’m in heaven with an angel, thank you. Maybe, we can talk about that life you want to live.”

“I think the shot is working just fine. Now let me see what else I can do to get us out of here faster.”

“Don’t leave me now, nurse, we are just getting started.”

“I see our patient is in good form, Miss Way.”

“Why, yes, he is and cute too.”

James pulled Ginger Way from Sam and said to her,

“We have a problem. The pilot and co-pilot managed to escape

to safety somewhere. I’ll need your help flying this aircraft out of here.”

“My, my, you are the lucky one. I might be able to help you out, Congressman. I would hate to see the headlines in The Washington Post,

U.S. Congressman arrest in foreign country for looting and rioting.

You get my drift?”

“Yes, loud and clear, Miss Way. Now are you going to help us get out of here quickly?”

“Come on, Congressman, let’s fly this one. I do need your co-piloting skills, after all.”

“I’m sure you do.”
